Indian Coast Guard Breaks Record With Largest Ever Drug Bust Of 5,500 Kg In Andaman Seas

The Indian Coast Guard has seized a record 5,500 kilograms of methamphetamine from a fishing boat near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This is believed to be the largest drug bust ever made by the Coast Guard.

On November 24, a Coast Guard plane spotted a suspicious trawler, identified as Soe Wai Yan Htoo, about 150 km from Port Blair.

The pilot reported the sighting and fast patrol boats were quickly sent to investigate. The boat was intercepted and towed to Port Blair for further inspection.

After searching the vessel, officials found more than 3,000 packets of methamphetamine, each weighing 2 kg. Six Myanmar nationals were arrested in connection with the drug seizure.

Defense officials say the drugs were likely meant for distribution in India and neighbouring countries. India is constantly making efforts to tackle drug trafficking, particularly from countries like Pakistan and Iran.

Earlier this year, India’s Coast Guard and Navy have already seized thousands of kilograms of drugs, including 700 kg of methamphetamine, in another operation earlier this month.

So far, in 2024, authorities have captured around 3,500 kg of drugs.
