Boluda Towage, the towing division of Spain’s Boluda Corporación Marítima, continues to strengthen its presence in Australia with the acquisition of harbor towage company Mackenzie Marine & Towage (MMT), which operates in the Port of Esperance, the only deep-sea port in southern Western Australia.
With the MMT acquisition, Boluda Towage takes a further step forward in Australia, extending its reach from the North (Port Moresby, in PNG) and East (Weipa, Cairns, Mackay, Gladstone, Brisbane, Newcastle, Botany/Sydney Botany and Melbourne) to the West Coast (Esperance), operating a fleet of over 43 vessels.
This move is part of Boluda Towage’s strategic roadmap, exploring new opportunities in the region with a presence in key ports, consolidating its expansion along the country and ensuring safe and efficient operations.
MMT is a family-owned company that has established itself as a prominent and trusted name in the marine towage industry in Western Australia for more than 50 years. After this acquisition, the leadership team in Esperance Port will continue to be headed by Sean McKenzie, ensuring continuity and a clear vision as the company accelerates growth and builds stronger connections with local partners and customers.
Located in the southeastern part of Western Australia, the Port of Esperance is a critical hub for export activities, particularly in the mining and agricultural sectors.
With deep-water capabilities designed to accommodate large bulk carriers, Esperance stands as a critical infrastructure asset for Western Australia’s export economy, supporting the efficient movement of iron ore, grain, and other key commodities to global markets.
Operating a fleet of over 850 vessels and supported by 10,000 professionals, Boluda Towage is present on five continents and in over 232 ports across Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America. The company provides port, coastal, and offshore towage solutions as well as maritime salvage.
