Allseas new heavy transport vessel Grand Tour will feature future-ready Wärtsilä 31 engines

Wärtsilä will supply the engines for the Grand Tour, a new purpose-built semi-submersible heavy transport vessel (HTV) on order for Switzerland-based offshore contractor Allseas Group at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China.

With delivery scheduled for first quarter 2028, the Grand Tour will have a load capacity of 40,000 tonnes. It is designed to carry the world’s largest offshore structures across oceans and easily transfer them to Allseas’ massive twin-hulled Pioneering Spirit for installation.

The Grand Tour is designed to fit exactly inside the bow slot of Pioneering Spirit. This integration will streamline the offshore installation process, and offer clients a one-stop-shop for transport and installation of large structures fabricated far away from the installation location.

The vessel will operate with four Wärtsilä 31 engines, each fitted with a Wärtsilä NOx Reducer for emissions abatement.

The future-proof Wärtsilä 31 engine was selected for the new vessel because of its modular design, which enables a significant reduction in maintenance requirements and costs, and its readiness to use alternative sustainable fuels.

“This new HTV strengthens the flexibility of our fleet and how we deliver projects ” says Sytske de Groot, manager, naval architecture at Allseas. “We selected the Wärtsilä 31 engine for its high efficiency, future-ready design and ability to transition to low- and zero-carbon fuels, which supports both operational adaptability and our long-term sustainability ambitions.”

“The Wärtsilä 31 engine delivers what the industry needs today and prepares operators for tomorrow. Its exceptional fuel efficiency reduces operating costs immediately, while its capability to convert to sustainable fuels ensures a clear path toward decarbonization,” says Stefan Nysjö, vice president, power supply, Wärtsilä Marine. “This makes it one of the most future-ready propulsion solutions available.”
