Kongsberg Maritime launches new S-4L waterjet with landmark Horizon X contract
The first commercial installation of Kongsberg Maritime’s new Kamewa S-4L waterjet series will be in the next-generation high-speed ferry Horizon X. The multi-fuel vessel, which started construction at Austal Philippines on Feb.9 , is hydrogen-ready and will operate for Gotlandsbolaget on the route between Sweden’s largest island, Gotland, and mainland Sweden.
This route demands high speed, efficiency, and reliability to meet passenger expectations and optimize turnaround times, making advanced propulsion technology essential.
Horizon X will feature two of the new S160-S4L waterjets and two S100-S4LB booster units, marking the first commercial installation of the new S-4L series.
Developed by combining the best characteristics of Kongsberg Maritime’s proven S3 and S4 models, the S-4L delivers improved maneuverability, efficiency, and durability for large high-speed ferries and naval vessels.
Key enhancements include a dual bucket and steering nozzle system that significantly improves low-speed handling and docking efficiency, reducing turnaround times and fuel consumption.

The S-4L series also maintains a mean time between overhaul (MTBO) of 25,000 hours or five years, making it an ideal fit for demanding operational profiles. Constructed from duplex stainless steel, the waterjets offer exceptional strength and corrosion resistance.
The Horizon X design is hydrogen-ready, supporting Gotlandsbolaget’s long-term ambition to transition to zero-emission operations. This forward-thinking approach positions the vessel as a pioneer in sustainable high-speed ferry travel.
“For this challenging and innovative project, we aim to elevate the building of high-speed craft to the next generation, where the vessel incorporates new developments that support cleaner maritime transport, with proven and reliable technology as the foundation,” said Jonas Moberg, head of newbuildings at Gotlandsbolaget. “The new S160‑S4L waterjets with dual buckets provide not only efficient, powerful propulsion and manoeuvrability, but also the ability to reduce erosive effects in ports when docking sideways.”
“The S-4L series represents a major evolution in waterjet technology, designed to meet the needs of the next generation of high-speed ferries and naval craft,” said Frederik Appel, director products, waterjet systems at Kongsberg Maritime. “We are proud to be part of a project that is advancing the energy transition in the ferry market. By combining proven design elements with new innovations, we’ve created a solution that delivers outstanding performance, reliability, and efficiency.”
The S-4L series will be available from size 100 and above, ensuring flexibility for operators seeking high-speed, high-efficiency propulsion solutions.
