Siblings Make History As 1st Brother-Sister Duo To Command Indian Navy Warships
In a first for the Indian Navy, a brother and sister duo are together commanding two different warships. Commander Prerna Deosthalee Commander and Ishan Deosthalee have created history by taking on this responsibility.
Last year, Commander Prerna Deosthalee became the first female commander in the Indian Navy to be given command of a warship.
She is currently in command of INS Trinkat, a fast attack craft part of the Western Command. Her leadership reflects the Navy’s progressive approach to gender inclusiveness.
Commander Ishan Deosthalee, her brother, was recently appointed as the commander of the Indian Navy’s Veer-class missile ship, INS Vibhuti.
INS Vibhuti is a valuable asset to the fleet, having taken part in a steam past witnessed by President Droupadi Murmu off the coast of Goa in the Arabian Sea. Both siblings are currently serving under the Western Command.
On November 7, President Droupadi Murmu visited the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and attended an operational demonstration by the Navy alongside Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of Naval Staff.
In her speech, she praised the Navy’s strategic reach and capabilities, adding that the Indian Navy units are deployed across vast areas for extended durations, showing their capabilities and strategic influence.
She further recalled the moment when the Bulgarian president called her to express gratitude for rescuing the Bulgarian crew from a hijacked vessel earlier this year.
