The Royal Canadian Navy officially named its 6th Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship the Robert Hampton Gray in a ceremony that leaders said honours their history.<\/p>\n

It is named after a decorated Canadian naval aviator, who was also the last Canadian to get the Victoria Cross.<\/p>\n

The naming of the vessel is an important moment which gives her an identity, said Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee from the Royal Canadian Navy.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was timed so it coincided with the 80th anniversary of his death in action.<\/p>\n

This class of ships is dedicated to Canadian naval heroes, with names chosen through an extensive process.<\/p>\n

The ship\u2019s naming committee works under the deputy commander of the Navy and consults widely, after which the minister of National Defence approves the final choice.<\/p>\n

This event also showed the close relationship between the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force.<\/p>\n

The Air Force\u2019s 12 Wing Shearwater offers maritime helicopter detachments for many naval ships.<\/p>\n

Military leaders said that integrating air detachments into ship operations requires trust, training, and teamwork, and a strong bond between seafarers and the aircrew is a tradition worthy of celebration.<\/p>\n

Canadian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Jamie Speiser Blanchet said that it was a privilege to be included in the naval event, which shows the region\u2019s history and allows people to share in that tradition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
