In November 2024, a wooden boat with 73 people was seen around 33 nm southwest of Gavdos, an island off Crete, per the Greek Coast Guard.<\/p>\n
The tanker\u2019s Designated Person Ashore mentioned that it responded immediately to requests for assistance due to which the 73 foreign nationals were saved from the boat and the tanker crew also provided them with medical care, food and shelter.<\/p>\n
Panama Maritime Authority appreciated the tanker\u2019s crew members for their assistance.<\/p>\n
The survivors were sent to Kali Limenes, Crete. Another group of 36 foreign nationals were spotted on a wooden boat 38 nm south of Gavdos, picked up by another cargo ship and taken to Sfakia village in Crete.<\/p>\n
Gavdos is a tiny island with only 70 residents, who are often outnumbered by the migrants coming here, per Christian Science Monitor. The island lies 140 nm to the north of the coast of Libya.<\/p>\n
Its location makes the island attractive for Libyan human smuggling gangs. The island saw 1200 arrivals in the first 4 months of this year.<\/p>\n
Merchant Vessels play a vital role in responding to migrant ships in distress, which often take great risks. Hence, IMO has formed a special commendation for all ships and seafarers who save migrants at sea.<\/p>\n
