The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) at East Port Said has inaugurated a major expansion valued at USD 500 million, significantly increasing its capacity and operations.<\/p>\n

The opening ceremony was attended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and marked the official completion of the project, which adds 2.2 million TEUs of annual handling capacity and raises SCCT\u2019s total capacity to 7 million TEUs.<\/p>\n

The upgrade includes 955 metres of additional quay and 510,000 square metres of new yard space. The expanded terminal is supported by 12 quay cranes, 30 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes and more than 90 trucks. These additions are designed to enhance operational efficiency and meet growing regional transshipment demand.<\/p>\n

APM Terminals has introduced electric RTGs to reduce emissions and continues to invest in battery-electric equipment, renewable energy and energy-efficient systems. These steps contribute to the company\u2019s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.<\/p>\n

The expansion is also creating over 1,000 employment opportunities in East Port Said.<\/p>\n

According to indirect statements from Lars Mikael Jensen, Head of Hubs and Ocean Collaboration at APM Terminals, the expansion shows the company\u2019s commitment to Egypt and its partnerships, while emphasising the terminal\u2019s strong operational performance within its global network.<\/p>\n

In separate indirect comments, SCCT Managing Director Keld Mosgaard Christensen expressed appreciation for the support received from the President, ministers, authorities and partners. He said the expansion would help strengthen trade opportunities for Egypt and the wider region.<\/p>\n

SCCT is one of eight major hub terminals selected by APM Terminals to support the East\u2013West network operated by A. P. Moller\u2013Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The network aims to offer reliable schedules, competitive transit times and resilient operations with fewer port calls.<\/p>\n

The new investments at SCCT also support faster transshipment and the use of advanced digital planning tools, including digital twins.<\/p>\n

According to the latest Container Port Performance Index by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Port Said and SCCT were ranked as the third most efficient container port in the world and the top port in the region in 2024.<\/p>\n
