{"id":21227,"date":"2025-12-03T20:02:34","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T20:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=21227"},"modified":"2025-12-03T20:02:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T20:02:34","slug":"derecktor-to-build-new-chartwell-designed-research-vessel-for-soundwaters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=21227","title":{"rendered":"Derecktor to build new Chartwell-designed research vessel for SoundWaters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    Derecktor to build new Chartwell-designed research vessel for SoundWaters<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mamaroneck, N.Y.-based Derecktor Shipyards reports that it has reached and agreement to build a new vessel for <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49Ouq2R\">SoundWaters, <\/a>a Stamford, Conn., nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and Long Island Sound stewardship.<\/p>\n<p>Designed in collaboration with Chartwell Marine, the new purpose-built research and education vessel will expand SoundWaters\u2019 hands-on marine science programming.<\/p>\n<p>The new 50 \u00d7 23 foot aluminum research catamaran will be named R\/V <em>Brewer <\/em>in honor of Jack Brewer, founder of Brewers Marinas. Derecktor says that it blends proven performance with a flexible educational layout optimized for data collection, onboard learning, and passenger safety.<\/p>\n<p>Construction will take place at Derecktor\u2019s Mamaroneck yard.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-key-specifications\">Key specifications<\/h4>\n<p>Personnel: 2 Crew + 35 Passengers<br \/>Propulsion: Volvo Penta D8-700 IPS with secondary and docking control stations<br \/>Electrical: Alternators + auxiliary Fisher Panda generator, system designed with Canal Marine<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mission Outfit:<\/li>\n<li>A-frame with level-wind Okeanus trawl winches<\/li>\n<li>Pullmaster winch for buoy and mooring deployment\/retrieval<\/li>\n<li>Davit for Ponar grab sampling and CTD casts<\/li>\n<li>Wet\/dry laboratory with education-focused layout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Navigation &amp; Electronics: Integrated Garmin package supplied by L&amp;L Electronics and a lighting package from Imtra.<br \/>Heating &amp; cooling: High-efficiency heat pump system from Termodinamica<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-on-water-programs\">On-water programs<\/h4>\n<p>With R\/V <em>Brewer,<\/em> SoundWaters will offer on-water programs to Long Island Sound schools from New Rochelle to New London and Port Washington to Greenport<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project brings together craftsmanship, collaboration, and community,\u201d said Erik Derecktor, commercial manager, Derecktor Shipyards. \u201cSoundWaters\u2019 educational mission aligns perfectly with our own vision of building vessels that make an impact in the community. This platform will serve our employees\u2019 families, our neighbors\u2019 children, our industry\u2019s future craftspeople and mariners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SoundWaters, founded in 1989, uses the waters of Long Island Sound as a living classroom to promote environmental literacy and conservation.
