{"id":23182,"date":"2026-01-12T20:02:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=23182"},"modified":"2026-01-12T20:02:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:02:27","slug":"bc-ferries-selects-abb-tech-for-its-new-major-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=23182","title":{"rendered":"BC Ferries selects ABB tech for its New Major Vessels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    BC Ferries selects ABB tech for its New Major Vessels<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>ABB has been selected to supply a complete package of power, propulsion and control technology for four new hybrid-electric, double-ended passenger and car ferries that will replace four end-of-life vessels, under BC Ferries\u2019 New Major Vessel (NMV) program. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-wp-embed is-provider-marine-log wp-block-embed-marine-log\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aURXgwjXoe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/bc-ferries-moves-ahead-on-plan-to-build-five-new-nmv-ferries\/\">BC Ferries moves ahead on plan to build five new NMV ferries<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"\u201cBC Ferries moves ahead on plan to build five new NMV ferries\u201d \u2014 Marine Log\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/bc-ferries-moves-ahead-on-plan-to-build-five-new-nmv-ferries\/embed\/#?secret=cCS5rEnQHn#?secret=aURXgwjXoe\" data-secret=\"aURXgwjXoe\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Originally hoped to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/bc-ferries-moves-ahead-on-plan-to-build-five-new-nmv-ferries\/\">five vessel program <\/a>had funding been authorized, the NMV project is aimed at delivering safe, environmentally sustainable and reliable operations in and around the Strait of Georgia, the body of water separating Vancouver Island from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>The NMV double-enders have been <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/49Pf9ya\">designed in collaboration with Norway\u2019s LMG Marin<\/a> to be able to carry up to 360 standard-sized vehicles and 2,100 passengers, marking a significant capacity increase from the 250-310 vehicles and 1,200-1,500 passengers that the retiring vessels currently accommodate. They will also be among the largest double-ended ferries in the world, with significantly improved energy efficiency and propulsion systems designed for both future flexibility and environmentally sustainable operations.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled for delivery beginning in 2029 from China Merchants Industry Weihai (CMI Weihai) Shipyard, the vessels will be equipped with ABB\u2019s gearless, steerable Azipod electric propulsion. The system offers proven reliability thanks to significantly fewer moving parts than mechanical thrusters, while the special propeller design helps reduce underwater radiated noise (URN). This helps safeguard at-risk species, such as the Southern Resident killer whale, and preserve one of the world\u2019s most biologically rich marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>ABB\u2019s Onboard DC Grid power distribution system will serve as the backbone for efficient energy flow, minimizing conversion losses and enabling higher overall system efficiency and lower emissions than comparable propulsion arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Each ferry will be equipped to accommodate up to 70 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage. This enables efficient hybrid operations today and supports a future shift to fully electric, zero-emission service. The hybrid configuration uses biofuel or renewable diesel and continuously balances energy between generators and batteries. Each vessel can also connect to a high-capacity shore charging system rated above 60 megawatts (MW) for full electric operation. This system is more than 100 times more powerful than the fastest public electric vehicle charging stations in North America, which typically deliver up to 500 kilowatts (kW) per plug. This high-capacity charging supports fast turnaround in port and enables the transition to zero-emission operations.<\/p>\n<p>ABB says that its digital solutions will give crews a clear overview of ship operations and support safe, efficient journeys. These digital technologies are intended to help BC Ferries deliver an improved travel experience for passengers while reducing environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBC Ferries\u2019 New Major Vessels represent the largest capital investment in our history and are essential to renewing our fleet, increasing capacity on our busiest routes, and strengthening system resilience,\u201d said Nicolas Jimenez, president &amp; CEO, BC Ferries. \u201cTheir design reflects what our customers value most: comfort, accessibility and environmental stewardship. With diesel-battery hybrid technology that can operate on bio and renewable diesel today and transition to full electrification as infrastructure evolves, these ships are a critical part of building a cleaner, quieter, and more reliable ferry system for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe proudly support BC Ferries\u2019 goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their operations, striving to meet British Columbia\u2019s 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for the transportation sector4 by at least 27% by 2030, from 2008 levels, in support of a cleaner future for British Columbia, and its ambitions to transition to all-electric operation,\u201d said Rune Braastad, president, ABB\u2019s Marine &amp; Ports division. \u201cABB\u2019s deep roots in Canada make it possible to support generational infrastructure projects like the New Major Vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The order with ABB was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.
