The United States has imposed sanctions on nine oil tankers and their owners for allegedly transporting Iranian oil to foreign markets.<\/p>\n

The sanctions were announced on Friday by the US Treasury Department. US authorities said the action was taken in response to Iran\u2019s decision to shut down internet access to hide abuses committed against citizens during the suppression of protests.<\/p>\n

The Treasury said the measures aim to cut off funds that Iran uses to repress its population.<\/p>\n

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the sanctions target an important part of Iran\u2019s oil export system, which Washington believes generates money used for internal repression.<\/p>\n

The restrictions are intended to block the sanctioned vessels and owners from accessing US financial systems or doing business with American entities.<\/p>\n

The Treasury\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control said the nine vessels are part of a shadow fleet, a group of older tankers used to move oil that is subject to international sanctions.<\/p>\n

The vessels are registered under flags from Panama, Palau, and other jurisdictions. US officials said similar fleets are used to transport sanctioned oil from Iran and Russia.<\/p>\n

The action comes as Iran faces a prolonged internet shutdown, described by activists as the worst in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Authorities blocked internet access on 8 January after protests spread across the country, limiting communication and information sharing.<\/p>\n

The sanctions were announced amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. At the same time, a US aircraft carrier group has moved closer to the Middle East.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump described the deployment as an armada while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One and said the ships were being positioned near Iran as a precaution in case further action is required.<\/p>\n

Trump has previously claimed that his pressure on Iran prevented the execution of more than 800 dissidents. Iran\u2019s top prosecutor responded on Friday by rejecting those claims and stating they were false.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, activists reported that at least 5,032 people have been killed during the crackdown on nationwide protests.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the United States also imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and companies accused of helping suppress the protests.<\/p>\n

Among those targeted was the secretary of Iran\u2019s Supreme Council for National Security, whom the Treasury Department accused of being among the first senior officials to call for violence against demonstrators.<\/p>\n
