{"id":24951,"date":"2026-02-15T04:17:25","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T04:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=24951"},"modified":"2026-02-15T04:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T04:17:25","slug":"australia-pledges-28b-to-progress-nuclear-submarine-shipyard-build","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=24951","title":{"rendered":"Australia pledges $2.8b to progress nuclear submarine shipyard build"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    Australia pledges $2.8b to progress nuclear submarine shipyard build<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Australia said on Sunday it would spend AU$3.9 billion ($2.76 billion) to progress construction of a shipyard that will help deliver nuclear-powered submarines under the trilateral AUKUS defence pact with the US and Britain.<\/p>\n<p>Announced in 2021, AUKUS is Australia&#8217;s largest-ever defence investment and will see US-commanded Virginia-class submarines based in Australia from 2027, several Virginia submarines sold to Australia from around 2030, and Britain and Australia building a new class of AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the AU$3.9 billion as a down payment to deliver the new shipyard in Osborne, a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Investing in the submarine construction yard at Osborne is critical to delivering Australia&#8217;s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines,&#8221; Albanese said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Official projections put the total cost of the build at AU$30 billion &#8220;over coming decades&#8221;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Osborne is where Australia&#8217;s ASC and Britain&#8217;s BAE Systems will jointly build Australia&#8217;s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, the core component of the AUKUS pact.
