It officially became active on 19 February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new decision, the EU set a financial reference amount of nearly \u20ac15 million (approximately $17.7 million) for the upcoming mandate period. Last year, the Council approved \u20ac17 million for the mission.<\/p>\n<p>A further strategic review will take place during 2026\u20132027.<\/p>\n<p>Operation ASPIDES provides defensive maritime security. Its role is to protect merchant and commercial vessels navigating through high-risk waters.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Today, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, reaches 24 months since its launch.<\/p>\n<p>EUNAVFOR ASPIDES has a totally defensive mandate, contributes to regional stability and prosperity by providing safety to fellow seafarers and protecting global common goods.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eu_eeas?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@eu_eeas<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U2jk0ZTd0j\">pic.twitter.com\/U2jk0ZTd0j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 EUNAVFOR ASPIDES (@EUNAVFORASPIDES) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EUNAVFORASPIDES\/status\/2024381268377366625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 19, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The mission operates along key sea lines of communication near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. It is also active in international waters across:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Red Sea<\/li>\n<li>The Gulf of Aden<\/li>\n<li>The Arabian Sea<\/li>\n<li>The Gulf of Oman<\/li>\n<li>The Gulf<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The mission monitors maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz as well.<\/p>\n<p>According to the operation\u2019s command, ASPIDES has supported more than 1,570 vessels during its 23 months of activity.<\/p>\n<p>The mission currently operates with three naval vessels contributed by EU member states including Greece, Italy, and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The command reported that it continues regular training exercises to maintain operational readiness.<\/p>\n<p>Although no Houthi attack has been reported since September 2025, threats against merchant shipping persist.
