The request sought permission for the hospital ship to offer medical services onboard to Chilean residents.

After evaluation, authorities decided not to grant authorisation.

Officials stated that national health regulations allow medical services to be delivered only by professionals accredited in Chile.

Since the ship’s medical staff do not hold such accreditation under Chilean law, authorities determined that the proposed operation could not proceed.

The ministry said it was not appropriate to authorise the health operation to function within the ship’s facilities under existing legal provisions.

Silk Road Ark is currently on a diplomatic and medical outreach mission to approximately twelve countries. The ship had anchored off Valparaiso as part of that schedule.

Hospital ships are often used for humanitarian assistance, naval diplomacy, and soft-power engagement. However, operations in foreign ports typically require compliance with local medical licensing and public health laws.

Chile’s decision comes as tensions grow between Chile, China, and the United States.

The U.S. government recently imposed visa restrictions on three Chilean officials. Washington claimed they had put critical telecommunications infrastructure at risk and weakened regional security.

Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren said the U.S. had raised concerns about a proposal by two Chinese companies to build an undersea cable connecting Chile and Hong Kong. Chilean authorities said the project is still in early stages and has not been approved.

The United States believes the proposed submarine cable could create security risks.

Reference: Reuters

MI News Network

Go to marine insight

Chile Blocks Chinese Hospital Ship Silk Road Ark From Treating Locals In Valparaiso Amid U.S. Pressure Image Credits: Wikipedia Chile has denied authorisation for a Chinese hospital ship to provide medical services to local residents while docked off Valparaiso, citing national health regulations.
