Image for representation purposes only<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIn a first for the global shipping industry, A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) will hold the naming ceremony for its newest dual-fuel methanol container vessel at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) near Mumbai on 28 February.<\/p>\n
This will be the first time a global shipping line will conduct such an event in India.<\/p>\n
The event will take place at Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd, which is 74% owned by A.P. Moller \u2013 Maersk\u2019s container terminal operating unit, A.P. Moller \u2013 Maersk Terminals.<\/p>\n
Gateway Terminals is one of five container handling facilities at JNP, India\u2019s busiest state-owned container gateway and the nation\u2019s second-largest overall.<\/p>\n
The ceremony will be attended by Maersk\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Vincent Clerc, and Executive Vice President, Keith Svendsen. Maersk stated that India is an extremely important market for the company.<\/p>\n
They also added that decarbonisation is an important topic for India, aligning with the country\u2019s sustainability goals. The soon-to-be-named vessel was built at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd in South Korea, one of the world\u2019s top shipbuilders.<\/p>\n
The ship has a capacity of 16,592 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), including 2,000 refrigerated containers (reefer containers).<\/p>\n
This vessel will be the tenth dual-fuel methanol-powered container ship to be inducted into Maersk\u2019s fleet, as the company moves toward achieving its goal of net-zero emissions by 2040.<\/p>\n
