{"id":6046,"date":"2025-03-12T20:05:38","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T20:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=6046"},"modified":"2025-03-12T20:05:38","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T20:05:38","slug":"american-cargo-for-american-ships-act-introduced-in-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=6046","title":{"rendered":"American Cargo for American Ships Act introduced in House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    American Cargo for American Ships Act introduced in House<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Reps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/?s=Carbajal\">Salud Carbajal <\/a>(D.-Calif.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/ezell.house.gov\/\">Mike Ezell<\/a> (R.-Miss.), respectively the ranking member and the chair of the House Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee, have introduced the bipartisan \u201cAmerican Cargo for American Ships Act,\u201d aimed at strengthening U.S .cargo preference laws, promoting American economic growth and reducing the ongoing decline of U.S. flagged ships.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would increase cargo preference for all U.S. Department of Transportation cargoes to 100%. The Cargo Preference Act of 1954 requires that 50% of civilian agencies cargo and Agricultural Cargo be carried on U.S.-flag vessels \u2013 it is the maritime industry\u2019s \u201cBuy America\u201d law. MARAD is the lead federal agency that manages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maritime.dot.gov\/cargo-preference\/military-cargoes\/cargo-preference-laws-and-regulations\">cargo preference activities and compliance.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) testified before the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and highlighted the decline of U.S. flagged ships. Per MARAD, there were 106 ships in the foreign trade flying the U.S. flag in 2012. Four years later, there were just 77 vessels. Today, the number has grown back to 87 foreign trading ships under the U.S. flag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican cargo transported by American ships bolsters our economy, creates more jobs, and protects our supply chains,\u201d said Rep. Carbajal. \u201cI\u2019m proud to introduce the American Cargo for American Ships Act that will ensure that our maritime workforce remains strong and competitive, safeguards our national security by reducing dependence on foreign vessels, and reinforces America\u2019s position as a global leader in trade and commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnsuring that American cargo is transported on American ships with American crew is a matter of economic strength and domestic investment,\u201d Rep. Ezell said. \u201cThis bill prioritizes U.S. vessels and American jobs, reinforcing our maritime industry and reducing dependence on foreign shipping.
