(IPS) on August 23, 2024, in cooperation with ClassNK as part of a Green Innovation Fund Project under Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nedo.go.jp\/english\">New Energy a<\/a>nd Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).<\/p>\n<p>The development project for the ammonia-fueled tugboat vessel started in October 2021 as part of the Green Innovation Fund Project; \u201cDevelopment of vessels equipped with domestically produced ammonia-fueled engines.\u201c  It was completed in August 2024, becoming the world\u2019s first commercial-use ammonia-fueled vessel, with NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha engaged deploying it on a three-month demonstration voyage while conducting tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay.<\/p>\n<p>NYK and IPS analyzed the ammonia co-firing and GHG-reduction rates during vessel operations and confirmed them to consistently exceed 90% and rise to approximately 95% in each of the main engine load ranges, as shown in the table below.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1470cf00-805f-c5b7-2071-eb3d54465963.jpg?resize=700%2C217&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"mmonia-fuel tugboat table\" class=\"wp-image-99659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1470cf00-805f-c5b7-2071-eb3d54465963.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1470cf00-805f-c5b7-2071-eb3d54465963-300x93.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><\/figure>\n<p>The demonstration tests while in tugboat operation are the world\u2019s first trial of its king, confirming, says NYK, that ammonia is one of the most viable and promising options as a next-generation fuel for vessels.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel will continue to be used for tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay, and the project will continue to accumulate knowledge related to the development and operation of ammonia-fueled vessels.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, NYK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/news\/is-j-eng-edging-ahead-on-future-fuel-engines\/\">Japan Engine Corporation,<\/a> IPS, and Nippon Shipyard Co., Ltd. are working together to develop an ammonia-fueled ammonia gas carrier, which is scheduled to be delivered in November 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/inland-coastal\/coastal\/worlds-first-commercially-operational-ammonia-fueled-tugboat-completes-demo-voyage\/\">World\u2019s first commercially-operational ammonia-fueled tugboat completes demo voyage<\/a> appeared first on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/\">Marine Log<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> \t<BR><br \/>\n <BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    Nick Blenkey<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/inland-coastal\/coastal\/worlds-first-commercially-operational-ammonia-fueled-tugboat-completes-demo-voyage\/?utm_source=rss&#038;utm_medium=rss&#038;utm_campaign=worlds-first-commercially-operational-ammonia-fueled-tugboat-completes-demo-voyage\">Go to marinelog<\/a><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n <BR><\/BR><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World\u2019s first commercially-operational ammonia-fueled tugboat completes demo voyage ClassNK reports that the world\u2019s first commercial-use ammonia-fueled tugboat, Sakigake, has successfully completed a three-month demonstration voyage, during which it engaged in tugboat operations in Tokyo Bay and achieved a GHG-emission reduction of up to approximately 95%.
