Worse yet, threatening storms forming ahead of weather reports loomed over them. He activated his EPIRB\u2014a larger cousin to the PLB\u2014and 45 minutes later, Sea Tow showed up, followed by a Coast Guard rescue boat. Loss of life was averted, and Marshall and his crew lived to fish another day.<\/p>\n<p>This is just one of many rescue stories enabled by emergency \u00adlocator beacons. Here is what you need to know about rescue PLBs and SOS messengers.<\/p>\n<p>Personal locator beacons are designed to speed rescue by SAR teams via government-run Cospas-Sarsat satellites, which are programmed to notify appropriate response authorities\u2014such as the US Coast Guard, or terrestrial rescuers for skiers and \u00adhikers\u2014of an emergency. PLBs are the most compact and are \u00adbeing adopted with increasing frequency by recreational \u00adboaters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another type of beacon device is an SOS messenger, which is designed to use private \u00adcommunication satellites such as\u00a0Globalstar to \u00adcommunicate with\u00a0private rescue-\u00adcoordination bureaus to reach rescue authorities at sea or in the \u00adwilderness. An added benefit to these is that they allow \u00adlimited \u00adtwo-way \u00adcommunication, but unlike a PLB, they require a \u00adsatellite-service fee.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Distinctions<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PLBs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>PLBs, until recently, could not talk back. Now, some offer limited satellite communications for an added fee.<\/li>\n<li>Only PLBs talk to Cospas-\u00adSarsat constellations and are the gold standard for rescue.<\/li>\n<li>PLBs also transmit a 121.5 mHz homing signal to give \u00adfinal line-of-sight directions.<\/li>\n<li>Some PLBs also transmit an automatic information \u00adsystem message via VHF digital selective calling VHF radio, \u00adallowing nearby Good Samaritans to spring into action. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>No rescue signal fees are \u00adrequired for use.<\/li>\n<li>PLBs must be registered at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beaconregistration%E2%80%8B.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beaconregistration\u200b.noaa.gov<\/a> to effect a rescue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SOS Messengers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>These devices communicate via private satellite constellations to private rescue bureaus connected to local rescue \u00adauthorities.<\/li>\n<li>They send SOS calls via \u00adprivate satellite constellations with frequent position \u00adupdates.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike PLBs, they are \u00addesigned to accommodate two-way communication via smart-device connections or predetermined messages \u00adentered into a web portal.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike PLBs, they require satellite service fees paid for specific periods\u2014monthly or annually\u2014and flexible fees based on units with two-way data transmission.<\/li>\n<li>SOS messengers must be \u00adregistered with the manufacturer as part of subscription\u00a0 to generate an SOS response.
