{"id":810,"date":"2024-11-18T20:03:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T20:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=810"},"modified":"2024-11-18T20:03:45","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T20:03:45","slug":"bae-norfolk-wins-new-navy-contracts-worth-202m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=810","title":{"rendered":"BAE Norfolk wins new Navy contracts worth $202M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    BAE Norfolk wins new Navy contracts worth $202M<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., has received $202 million in U.S. Navy contracts to provide modernization and maintenance services aboard the guided missile destroyer USS <em>Laboon<\/em> (DDG 58) and the amphibious assault ship USS<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/?s=USS+Wasp\"> Wasp<\/a><\/em> (LHD 1). BAE Systems shipyard personnel and their subcontractor teammates will begin working aboard both ships next February and March, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe award of these two contracts will provide extensive work for our Norfolk shipyard team,\u201d said David M. Thomas, Jr., vice president and general manager of BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair. \u201cWe look forward to using our proven experience on recent LHD and DDG work to return these ships to the fleet in excellent condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the $114 million docking selected restricted availability (DSRA) contract for USS <em>Laboon,<\/em> BAE Systems will dry-dock the ship to perform underwater hull maintenance, while repairing the ship\u2019s main propulsion system; preserving internal ballast and fuel tanks, and the external superstructure; and rehabilitating crew berthing and dining compartments. The DSRA contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $117 million. USS <em>Laboon<\/em> is named in honor of F<a href=\"https:\/\/jesuitonlinebibliography.bc.edu\/catalog\/983\">ather John Francis Laboon <\/a>(1921\u20131988), a captain in the Navy\u2019s Chaplain Corps who was awarded the Silver Star during World War II while serving on the submarine USS <em>Peto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Under the selected restricted availability (SRA) contract awarded for USS <em>Wasp<\/em>, BAE Systems will perform mechanical work in the engineering spaces, inspect and repair interior hull structures, and refurbish the habitability spaces for the ship\u2019s crew and embarked Marine troops. The SRA contract includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $104 million. USS <em>Wasp<\/em> is the tenth U.S. ship to be so named. The shipyard previously worked aboard the Wasp from February 2021 to April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>BAE\u2019s Norfolk shipyard is currently concluding repair availabilities aboard Wasp-class ship USS <em>Kearsarg<\/em>e (LHD 3) and the destroyer USS <em>Nitze<\/em> (DDG 94).
