{"id":922,"date":"2024-11-20T20:08:07","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T20:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=922"},"modified":"2024-11-20T20:08:07","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T20:08:07","slug":"armon-picks-thordon-compac-for-liberty-lines-high-speed-hybrid-ferries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/krogragg.com\/?p=922","title":{"rendered":"Armon picks Thordon COMPAC for Liberty Lines\u2019 high-speed hybrid ferries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    Armon picks Thordon COMPAC for Liberty Lines\u2019 high-speed hybrid ferries<br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><br \/>\n    <!-- no image --><br \/>\n \t<BR><br \/>\n<BR><\/BR><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Thordon Bearings has completed the delivery of COMPAC propeller shaft and SXL rudder bearings for the series of environmentally advanced high-speed ferries under construction at Spain\u2019s Astilleros Armon for Italian operator Liberty Lines.<\/p>\n<p>San Sebastian-based Echetalde, Thordon\u2019s authorized distributor in Spain, delivered 18 seawater-lubricated COMPAC propeller shaft bearings and nine grease-free SXL rudder bearings to the shipyard for installation on nine hybrid ferries scheduled for delivery over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>The yard has an option for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incatcrowther.com\/news\/news-feed\/posts\/2023\/mar\/liberty-lines-hybrid-ferry-order-at-astilleros-armon-expands-to-twelve\/\">additional nine vessels<\/a> for delivery between 2027 and 2030.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-wp-embed is-provider-marine-log wp-block-embed-marine-log\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"njm3ykfmx7\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/liberty-lines-puts-its-first-hybrid-fast-ferry-into-operation\/\">VIDEO: Liberty Lines puts its first hybrid fast ferry into operation<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"\u201cVIDEO: Liberty Lines puts its first hybrid fast ferry into operation\u201d \u2014 Marine Log\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/liberty-lines-puts-its-first-hybrid-fast-ferry-into-operation\/embed\/#?secret=AkgrVP80mu#?secret=njm3ykfmx7\" data-secret=\"njm3ykfmx7\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The first vessels in the series, the 39.7 meter long, 251-passenger capacity <em>Vittorio Morace<\/em> and <em>Cristina M<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/passenger\/ferries\/liberty-lines-puts-its-first-hybrid-fast-ferry-into-operation\/\">were delivered earlier this year <\/a>and are the world\u2019s first IMO HSC (High-Speed Craft code) hybrid fast ferries of their size.<\/p>\n<p>Although Armon has a number of years\u2019 experience with Thordon\u2019s SXL material, this is the first time it has specified the COMPAC system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Echetalde\u2019s recommendation, the shipyard decided to slightly alter the original Incat-Crowther design to accommodate COMPAC,\u201d said Malcolm Barratt, Thordon Bearings\u2019 regional manager \u2013 Southern Europe &amp; Gulf Med. \u201cThe original design included three competitor-supplied seawater-lubricated bearings on each shaft, but with COMPAC only two propeller shaft bearings \u2013 aft and forward \u2013 were required. The yard found this the optimum solution, not only because it fits better with the environmental ethos of the design, but it was the more cost-effective solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/PR-Nov24_COMPACstack.jpg?resize=700%2C494&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"COMPAC bearings\" class=\"wp-image-96628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/PR-Nov24_COMPACstack.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.marinelog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/PR-Nov24_COMPACstack-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>COMPAC bearings<\/em> <em>[Photo: Thordon]<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Designed to operate at a maximum speed of 30 knots, the hybrid-electric ferries are built according to the requirements set out in classification society RINA\u2019s Green Plus notation, a comprehensive scheme to evaluate the degree of environmental friendliness of seagoing ships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese ships combine traditional engines with advanced electric propulsion systems, significantly reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.
